Up until the recession hit, coupon clipping was portrayed as a hobby for housewives and diehard bargain hunters. But when the economic landscape changed in 2008, spending less became something to brag about, and coupon use shot up to record levels.

According to a study from Inmar Inc., a tech-driven solutions provider, consumers redeemed 3.3 billion coupons in 2009 – that’s up 27 percent from 2008 and the highest redeem rate since 1988.

The newspaper is still the prime spot for consumers in search of coupons, but online coupons showed an increase as well – by a whopping 92 percent. By adding a printable coupon for services or products to your Web site, you can increase traffic; searches for “online coupons” and “online printable coupons” jumped more than 300 percent.

Another advantage to coupons is that it builds brand loyalty that can carry over into better economic times.
