If business is slow lately and you’re trying to get more people in the door, or if you’re announcing a last-minute bargain on products and services, a fast way to get the word out is through Twitter, a social networking Web site that allows you to broadcast short announcements.

Twitter is used by “following” other users, which is similar to becoming a “friend” on Facebook or MySpace. The key is to get a large network of potential customers “following” you on twitter. Then, they will receive your broadcasted messages, some of them straight to a person’s cell phone.

Conversely, by following your customers, you will learn much about their preferences, actions, feelings and whims, as they are likely to update their statuses often. Additionally, the best way to get someone to follow you is to start following them.
